TOPIC: Must have walked 5 miles today...woooo

plm that looks like some sort of tree sure not goldenseal. Keep looking it all looks like ginseng for a bit but you will learn sure enough what it looks like if its there.

Looks like a young hickory tree, but I'm not 100% sure. it is not ginseng or Goldenseal. Both of them have a fleshy stem that goes all the way to the ground. There is no woody part to either one of them. The stem on both of these plants come up and branch off at a singular point.

The stem on one plant is about 36 inches long and has some thorns on it...is that another clue??

Only that it isn't ginseng or goldenseal, unfortunately. Keep trying...everyone looks a second time at those little hickory trees.

Is there anyone in North Eastern PA that could work with me to find some ginseng??
Nobody in my area has any idea so it might be that there is some if it has not been touched.

Might be what we call fools seng no idea what it really is. It'll sure make you look from a distance. Or a hickory sprout.

What you found and dug is a small mountain ash tree seedling. I'm 99.5% sure.

I agree with Mandolin... looks like a ash tree sapling to me.

My mom has a big old ash tree in her front yard and it seeds lots of little saplings like that.

They grow real fast.

It does somewhat resemble a hickory sapling, but looks more like ash to me.

Here below is a pic of my boy with a couple little 3 prong ginseng plants.

Notice the leaf pattern, 3 larger leaves that all point out away from the center, and then 2 smaller leaves that point in towards the center. That is the pattern that catches your eye once you get your eye trained to find it.
