TOPIC: My boy and I did some scouting today

Ginseng season officially opens Aug 1 here in PA, even though they have been saying for years that they are going to move it to Sept 1. I thought I would go check out a new spot today even though there is no way the berries would be ripe. Last year it was the end of the 3rd week of August before we could dig. Anyway, I needed to get out in the woods today and here are some pictures. Berries no where near ready, but found some nice 4 prongs and 3's in a patch of 32 plants varying in size and age. Nice little find for only being in the woods for 2 hours and not getting very deep in any hollows. Carried the big camera to try and get a few nice pictures.

Nice timber, good looking ginseng and a fine boy there.

He looks to be (what around 10-11 year old ?)

I have a 9 year old myself and hope to get him interested in hunting seng this year.

It does look like you are a few weeks out from having any red berries.

I do think that Aug 1 is just too early, Aug 15 (like here in TN is questionable) and Sept 1 would probably be a better start date for most States.

Now if they could only set the start date right, and keep all of the poachers from taking it early - that would be nice.

I agree with the Sept 1 date as well. Maybe one day it will be consistent throughout the country. They have been saying they are going to change it in PA for years- I don't know what the hold up is.

My son will turn 10 in September. I had him out a couple times last year and hope he will want to go more this year. Until they truly get the addiction to hunting Seng its sometimes hard to keep them interested for any great length of time. I love having him out there with me though and don't mind limiting outings to 2 or 3 hours of woods time.

That sure is some nice seng growing right in there with those beautiful ferns. Looks like a nice cool and fertile spot.
