mhowa

I would have loved to be able, but too far from Maine.

Vafiddler brought the info to our attention. Here's the posting.

I also noticed that Andy Hankins is speaking also.

If you go to hear Persons and Beyfuss, I'm sure it will be well worth your time.

Yes, I was there on Friday morning. Kinda small group, but worth the trip. I drove 4 hours each way.

Lot?s of interesting things. Pictures and stories from around the world, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, China and even Israel. All were cultivated farms, I don?t think anyone outside the US and maybe Australia, is growing wild simulated in great numbers. The price for cultivated was up last year for the first time in several years. There was a shortage of seed last year, and as a result, some suppliers of seed sold green seed as stratified. I would guess that will translate into another shortage this year as well. Also learned that if first year roots don?t grow close to 2 inches, their chances of survival is pretty slim. Bob also had some good slides on diseases.

This was really a great event, and the small number of people in attendance (I counted 9, and 4 of them were my family) just made it easier to talk to Mr. Beyfuss, Persons, and Hankins. Marvin, I was the annoying younger fellow in the front row asking all the questions. I was really trying my hardest not to ask 5 questions after every slide!

They were kind enough to put up with me for most of the day, including at least 2 or 3 hours of questions. And then the highlight was the hike they led to show companion plants and evaluate potential sites. I couldn't believe there was only one person other than my Dad, brother, and I that went on the hike.

When the speakers mentioned that there was a lot of green seed being mixed in with stratified this year, I couldn't help but think of the problems reported on this forum.

I'll try to write some more tomorrow. I tried to really pin them down on some issues that we've been debating on here. I tried to talk Dr. Persons into checking out the forum and contributing, so maybe we'll hear from him one of these days too!

I wish I could have been there!

Sounds like you guys were fortunate to have few people show up instead of alot.

On the shortage of seeds:

I have heard that you should purchase your seeds early. Since most people that are selling seeds, also use those seeds to grow their own seng. They are going to use the best seeds for them selves and second to the early orders. Late orders are getting the \"bottom of the Barrel\" or leftovers. Or perhaps green seeds.

I have always ordered my seeds in July or Aug. and have them shipped in Oct. In seven years time I have never recieved green seeds. I think the longer you wait to get your seeds, the more chance of recieving poor quality seeds or seeds that are green. Then again I think some reputable seed dealers would never send green seeds.

I suggest, Order early, Plant Early!

I would have liked to have gone to that as well, however had conflicting events and had to choose.

Mhowa: when you say: \"if first year roots don?t grow close to 2 inches, their chances of survival is pretty slim,\" are you meaning:
1] planted from seeds, or
2]a measurement of the root of a seedling's first year, or
3]the top growth of a seedling....????

correct me if I'm wrong Mhowa, but I'm pretty sure this was from a picture of a first year plant grown from seed (3 leaflets). It should be two inches tall by the end of the growing season. That was something new to me as well!
