TOPIC: Babies are still Babies

I agree with what TN was said in regards to the calcium and the amount of light on your beds.

There is alot written about stunted plants that are growing in soils with low calcium. And it is a fact that too much shade will cause plants to grow very slowly

You should check to make sure you have enough calcium in your soil and if needed, cut down some trees to let in more light.

Good Luck!

if everything in your soil is in spec. as I figure you do then it can only be sun or moisture. Moisture is also a big thing in growing Ginseng. Light is easy to check with low cost meters, but do the tests over a few different weeks for best seasonal levels. Moisture is tougher to get right.

It is not uncommon for some plots to be slower than others and your plants are nothing to worry about, but it is also not uncommon for some two year old plots to have 20% produce seed.

To find the best sites plant 20 different sites with fifty seeds and return every year to check. We still go back and check on sites we did twenty years ago and are now close to someones herbijauna gardens, cottage, hunt camp or bear barrels.

Recheck your soil tests and light meter readings and take note of moisture levels, I don't know of any inexpensive moisture testing equipment out there, maybe others do.

guy :hope this helped

I got quite a few large 3 leafers coming up from last year (my first year), and some 5 leafers.

Put out a large batch of 2YO roots I picked up last fall that did very well. Some 2 prong, the majority were 3 prong, a couple of 4 prong, so there may have been some older roots in that batch.

Am seeing a lot of variance in size, and so far haven't spotted any major patterns. Under osage orange bushes seems to be a very good place. The 5 roots that I put under one are quite large and look very happy.

Very nice, johno. Do you have any pics of what the new rootlet plants look like/how you planted them?

I would like to see a thread dedicated to planting rootlets.. With some nice pictures.
I am going to pick some up this fall.

Hey guys thanks for all the info. It would say it would be the light factor. Because in other areas once the seng does take off it does produce some nice roots. But also im not to worried about it for the reason i want my roots to look as wild as they possibly can even if i have to wait a few more years before digging. But the roots that i have dug in the past from this same patch no one would ever be able to tell that i planted them. But i also don't do nothing as far as fertilize and toil the soil either.
