TOPIC: Slow Plant Emergence!

Slow Plant Emergence! 13 years 11 months ago #9878

It's been a week since I spotted two and three yr old plants emerging. And they still have not opened their leaves completly. The cold weather in the upper 50's and low 60's has slowed them down.

I have noticed a few seedlings starting to peek through the mulch.

Yesterday, my son and I were back cutting firewood and noticed a three prong two yr old just emerging. Not rare, but it's nice to see a three prong that young. The seedlings are just starting to emerge, slowly.

Classicfur,
Great pics! That sure is a beautiful species of trilium. I do not believe I have ever seen that particular one in the woods before. I have seen many different ones and I have some favorites. I would put that one at the top of the list as far as being beautiful. It is amazing how prolific it is and growing in such a tight cluster.
Sure would like to have a root from that species someday.
Thanks,
Latt

I have seen this kind of trillium growing all over this area, but it is the first time I have seen it growing in a huge cluster. It's right next to the trail we travel on frequently, yet I have never seen it there before.

I would have no problem digging some up for you. You just tell me how to dig it, and when.

I have 30 acres of land with just a small fraction of it suitable for growing seng. Behind my property is 100 acres owned by a lady that lives in Alaska. I have permission to grow on that land, but very little is good for seng. Too much pine, cedar and hemlock. And as the land gets down to the river theres some good seng habitat, but there are alot of Moose down there. I think a moose could ruin a send bed in just a few minutes.

Classicfur,
I appreciate the offer. When the trillium has almost completely died back in the late summer or fall you could probably dig a few roots for me. I think the Trillium seeds come on early in the summer too. It's been a long time since I have transplanted any Trillium. If I remember correctly, sometimes the roots are fairly long and horizontal to the ground underneath the soil and I am pretty sure they have Rhizomes. I do not think the roots are bulbous.
Let me know if you want any type of plant that grows around these parts but not in your area if there are any. I can get you some seeds or roots. I will have some Wild Goldenseal Seeds and Wild Bloodroot seeds this fall too.
Thanks,
Latt

I've made a note to dig the Trillium when it dies back. I will then dig up some Rhizomes for you.

If you could spare some Goldenseal seeds, that would be great. I have planted rhizomes but have never planted seeds. I have some seng beds that have some space for some goldenseal. I would appreciate that.

Thanks,

It's a deal thanks.
I will get you some wild seed this fall. Its like ginseng seed. When its green seed it will skip a spring and come up the following spring. I plant it just like I do ginseng seed and I do not let the seed dry out. Goldenseal seed goes a long way too. It's a small seed as you know and a couple of ounces contains over a thousand seeds. Let me know if you want some Jack-in-the-pulpit Root Bulbs and some blood root seeds too.

I showed my wife the pic of your trillium and she thought it was beautiful.
