Dr Beyfuss responded to my email asking what the blue log was all about. He says it is \"blue stain fungus\". When I looked this up on a search, I found it has a symbiotic relationship with pine Beatles, and is spread that way.
I think the blue log is the remnants of a either a hemlock or yellow pine, both of which there are in this patch.
