TOPIC: Patch 3

Patch 3 11 years 2 months ago #24640

Hey guys- we put in a third patch this past weekend. it was a real endeavor... had to remove the understory, and make a deer wall with it. Bear in mind that the understory is all rododendron, in places it's 12 feet tall.

I was very very happy to get all that done. We had a crew of young, athetic college students to assit us with it. So, another acre is cleared.
Yeah! I followed the cutting crew with my sprayer, putting down calcium and natures-grow solutions - an entirely organic spray derived from seaweed.

Will post some photos soon.

I hope to plant it next month.

Agreed. I hope this all works out for you buddy. You sure have taken some difficult land and turned it into a place for ginseng to grow. Talk about hard work.

Six pounds of seed went in this past weekend. That hillside is sure steep, tho; I felt like I needed one leg to be shorter than the orther....

took soils samples as well. Next month there's other things to do out there, weather permitting.

It was 21 degrees up there on Sat am. with about 1/2 inch os snow on the ground. I waited til Sunday to plant, when it would be warmer, and the snow had melted later saturday as well.

Next month I need to get up there and get the ground better prepped. I mean, that area is clean, however need to put lime down, as well as gypsum. Ca ratings here are very low, until I put things in order by adding gypsum.

I guess that I am going to work on my patch one as well, need to clear deadfall from the area, and border it better.

Whitjr,

Congrats on all of the hard work you all are doing! Hopefully, you will have some very good income crops in the future! Please continue to report back on how the Ginseng is doing in the areas where you all cleared the Rhododendron. I know that Ginseng will grow amongst Rhododendron as I have found it growing under and around them but really don't know if it will flourish!
