TOPIC: Seeds Forming Already!

Seeds Forming Already! 12 years 5 months ago #17688

Took a good look at some of my seed plots near my house today. Holy cow! Here it is just the late part of May and seeds are already starting to form! Just as well, as we seem to be in a dry spell, now.

Just got back from checking on my stuff. Lots of seedheads, but didn't notice any berries forming yet.

BCastle - You are probably just a week or so behind me here in KY. Have you had much moisture of late? I'm thinking the \"spicket\" has shut off and we are in for a dry spell. Maybe we'll get some afternoon thunderstorms, but those are usually spotty.

Maybe. I too am thinking it might be a hot dry summer. We are very dry here now, and didn't get the rains in April and early May we normally do. They came in February instead.

That might be one of the reasons for some of the delayed germination we are seeing....just too dry.

I am in southern middle TN and we had a dry spell for several weeks and that ended about 3 weeks ago, but the past 3 weeks we have got some decent rain.

I would not expect to see berries developing yet either, but now that you have seen some I will have to check my seed bed tomorrow and see what I can find.

Nice Pic !

Nice pic Kchacha. I haven't seen any berries starting to develop yet either, but haven't checked in the last week either. I have noticed in the past that plants coming from cultivated rootlets generally start developing berries a little earlier than what wild plants do. Is this plant from a cultivated scource?

Not much rain here lately either, but the ground still has pretty good moisture (for now).

5prong - yes, this plant is from seed that came from a woods grown cultivated source. I believe they were cultivated from a local source (transplanting of wild roots) originally.

Checked my ginseng over the weekend and sure enough, seeds already formed on some, then i checked some of my pictures from last year and compared them with some pictures that i have taken this year and it looks my my ginseng is more than 30 days ahead of where it was last year just by looking at the seed/flower heads and comparing the dates on the pictures, i guess that using date stamps on your pictures is good for checking things like this.

I agree k_duce, I always have the date stamp on my pics for that purpose.

I'll have to figure out that date thing on my camera. That sounds like an excellent way to keep track of photo records!

Well, I guess my drought was short lived, since I got 2.75\" of rain yesterday morning (according to my guage near my patches). Probably perfect timing with the berries forming, as there is now good ground moisture! ;)
