TOPIC: pulling ginseng plants

pulling ginseng plants 11 years 1 month ago #25223

Will ginseng grow back if you pull the stem out of the ground and leave the root?

Thanks

Yes it will, but you have to be carefull not to damage the top of the root (rhyzome) where next years bud sits at the top. The above ground part of the plant dies back each fall.

It should grow back next year as long as the growth bud wasn't damaged? if the growth bud was damaged it may take a couple of seasons to heal itself or grow another bud? Did you pull a stem up? if so im curios to know why?

Some of my co-workers make a 4-wheeler path today at break and found some ginseng. I couldn't take it so I went back there and found a whole mess of ginseng I pinched off most of them but a few pulled up out of the ground I didnt hurt the top that I know of so I just wanted to double check. There was some nice 4 prongs.

Twist the stem off at ground level and it will not damage them or pull them up.

When I snip the tops out of plants, I cut them close to the ground with a very sharp knife or scissors. I do so because the older the plant and bigger the top, the stem can be very tough and hard to break or twist off.

I agree with the others. As long as the bud isn't damaged, you are good. If they pulled out easily and clean, they were ready to drop anyway. I use a sharp pair of pruning snips for taking off the tops.

I make sure I cut every two prong and this really chaps my butt 3leaves also. I know some ruthless diggers that dig everything they find. I try to preach to them about when their kids and grandchildren want to dig , that it is up to us to ensure they have sein to dig . :(

I agree Belico,
Unfortunately some Sang buyers still buy the baby roots or these unethical diggers would have no place to sell these baby roots. As long as some buyers do this some people are going to continue this bad practice of digging everything in sight.

Hats off to the good sang buyers that do not buy immature roots.
