TNhunter that sounded like a great bunch of seng you found and I have done the exact thing.Find a nice patch of seng and while digging not eve notice the daddy plant till i was near or done digging. The soil in that area is superb black and rich even the mtn worms are huge and fat there and it is way up sheww the walk is a sight.

Maya I remember those pictures I was amazed at your great find last season and was happy for you those are beutiful roots and that top is stuning,I never ever tire of seeing great seng no matter how much I see...

FTB no those where not on a cliff but there is a double holler that runs up the mtn over there and it tops out in a flat about the size of 2 football fields long by 1 and 1/2 wide ( 200 x 150 tards approximite ) when you go up to that flat there is a burm that runs between two natural funnels and there is a logging road ( a very old logging road ) thats runs right above this burm about 100 yards long( a burm is something the loggers or miners create to stop heavy water flow from messing up there temporary roads in the mtn`s ) near the middle of that burm was this big 4 right above the old road.....there was also sevral other nice 4`s and even some digger 3`s they where so nice i dug 4 or 5 of them 3`s and I dont dig alot of threes in my favorite spots, but these where diggers.Still that plant stood towers above any seng that I have ever saw but one other that a freind found way back in a mtn in Harlan Co-

Those are potatoes LOL...Very nice!!!!

Bill...Nice plants where did you find those,on a cliff?

I found a total of 14 stunned plants.Lucky if they are 10 inches high. Two of them are 4 prongers. I'm hope'n to transplant them.maybe with loose soil they will do better.

I don't think this picture shows it well as I had it all dug out but this soil was amazing! Black, black, black, light and loamy. You don't see it that often but if you do the plants and roots will thrive.

Funny thing is, is that you wouldn't have thought seng would have been there. Top of a steep face, west facing and pines around it. This was one little spot with a boulder slide in the middle of a bunch of beech. I went back up there and planted hundreds of seeds.

Maya,
That is so cool. I too planted a bunch of seed in some black black black, light and loamy soil. I hope these seeds do well like your root did. Have you seen any seeds yet that you planted in that area?

No, it's one of those hikes you don't want to do to often, over an hour straight up hill, and a 1000' elevation change. I am going to do a scouting trip in the next couple weeks though, I want to check an area to the north of it. I'll bring the cam and get some better pics of that soil and hopefully a few monsters that were dormant last year.

One more monster pic!

This was from another area w/ that black loamy soil, one thing that I notice is that they have that thick fat neck on them.

Maya,

I too remember when you posted some of those last year.

Now that is sure some nice seng.

I have also found some really nice plants growing in that dark, dark, dark, light soil. Like where a big old log rotted or lots of leaf mulch accumilated and decomposed. Just very rich and lose soil.

But then again I realized last year how well the seng grows in that soil at the bottom of the limestone bluf's around here and that soil is completely different, light grey and just full of rock chips.

Think you may get different looking roots in the different soil types though.

Where yours were long lanky roots, the ones I found in that rock chip filled soil were short and fat bulby roots.

TN, I've got some spots as you discribe with chips, the seng grows well in it but nothing like in these spots with that black loam. We are blessed here where I live with the only place on earth where you can get pure white marble besides in Italy, and vast areas of limestaone. In fact I live alongside a company that mines and grinds it to make a calcium carbonate used in paper product, toothpaste and the like.

Most all our seng is more long rather than fat and bulby like I see in your pics. Who knows why.

These all came from a real good area with rock chips of a kind of shale like rock.
