TOPIC: Quality NY vs KY,VA?

Quality NY vs KY,VA? 12 years 5 months ago #20023

When watching ginseng sell on the web (ebay) why is it that the NY seng seems to fetch a better price than other states? I visually see no difference., and would have thought that NC seng would be among the top?

I'm no expert, but if I had to wager a guess, it would be because of the weather. Winter in NY is harsher and longer than say, VA,KY,TN, or WV. So a shortened growing season followed by a realistically too short of a harvest season all would factor in. I know I will catch flack for saying this but again, the buyer I sell to in WV is able to tell the difference in ginseng by looking at it. He can tell if it is from, NY, WV, TN or wherever. He says the best ginseng is NY ginseng. Followed by Wisconsin, then WV, Then KY, then Tennessee. I would have to bet that it is all climate related.

Thats interesting and makes sense. I know a buyer around here that will jump all over NC seng. And the gentleman that certifies my roots also told me that NC seng was very high on the list. I'm just a curious person who wonders to much.:S

I believe it is all in the buyers and there contacts and the quality of the digger.

If the guy you are selling to is selling the someone who is selling to someone who is selling to someone who is selling to the end user, you will not fetch as much as selling to the guy that is selling to the end user.

Also, and no offense but some of the roots being posted on this site are butchered. No hair roots left on the root at all!

My buyer will pay me a premium price for good older roots that have been dug with care. I'm sure I will be getting more than $200 per pound more than most of the diggers on this site. I've already been told I should be getting in the $800-$1000 per pound range!
