TOPIC: Old Mountain ginseng doesn't look the same

Old Mountain ginseng doesn't look the same 14 years 5 months ago #3033

A friend of mine has been talking about hunting ginseng in the mountains in east Tn. I went with him and the ginseng he found didn't look like what I found. I can locate the small 3-4 prong plants and walk over the BIG 4-5 prong plants. I hunted all day and found 35 plants that weighed 6 oz, he hunted behind me and found over 2 pounds wet with fewer plants that me. Does anyone have any pics of really old ginseng plants, and is their a different market for the roots he is finding. Most from 1-3 oz and the occassional 4-6 oz roots. I am going next week with him and will be taking alot of photos to post.

The old ginseng he found had 2 inch stems at the base of each leaf, and had 6-7 leafs on each prong. He even talked about finding stool plants. 3 prongs on top of 4 prongs with the berry pod coming out of the 3. Has anyone ever heard of this? Any pics?
