TOPIC: Have any of you tried eating poison ivy ?

Have any of you tried eating poison ivy ? 11 years 9 months ago #22472

I ran upon this video (and there are several others by other guys) on youtube last year. If you just search on eating poison ivy you will find several.

It needs to be done in the early spring (like right now here in my area) when the poison ivy leaves are still small and not fully developed and not super saturated with the oil that causes the reaction. In early spring like this, and at the top of the vine where the leaves are young and not fully developed... that is where you want to pick from and eat.

Some of the guys are putting little bits of leaves inside a capsul and taking it, and another I saw wrapped it in a little bread and just swallowed it whole.

The end result is supposed to be - you eat it in the spring - and then it does not bother you so much the rest of the year.

Poison Ivy is one of the things that I dis-like about Seng Hunting.. I always get some on my hands, fingers, etc...

Just wondering if any of you guys have tried this and if it did actually help ?

Not sure if I would try it. Would hate to get poison ivy internally. As the comedian Steven Wright said: \"I caught poison ivy on the brain and I could only scratch it when I thought of sandpaper\".

I am one of the lucky ones as I do not get poison ivy very easily. I have had it mildly a few times but I really have to handle a lot of it when pulling weeds etc to catch it. Ingesting things like this I have heard can help lead to being less sensitive to it. So it may work by consuming poison ivy, but I am not sure?

Dad did it one year, and it seemed to work. But he didn't actively try to get it either, so he may have just avoided it successfully. I'm not sure why, but he's never tried eating it since.

There use to be a product out called Imu Ivy or something like that that was a liquid made from poison ivy that you drank. It may still be made I do not know but it was supposed to build up a resistance to catching it. I have taken it before but usually after I get it a few times during the year it does not bother me anyway.

I hear you Billy and others...

If you look around online there is lots of folks saying it works and lots of others saying don't do it, it could kill you.

My boy Cole has lots of allergies and he takes allergy drops 3x daily, and the drops (from a MD prescription).. do contain the things he is allergic to, but in a weak mixture. They told us originally that after a year on the drops that his symptoms would decrease by around 50%, and at 2 years in the 75% range.

He has been on them for a little over a year now but it is hard to tell if they are actually working or not. Cost 140.00 for a little bottle of the stuff too.

Eating a little poison ivy sounds similar... but this guy is saying that in just about 2 weeks, you can stop and it will help all year.

I was hoping one of you guys had tried this out and knew for sure if it worked or not.

There is a product called ivyoff that claims it will help after you get the rash. I found the info below on their website (facts and fiction) and eating poison ivy they have listed in the fiction list. But then again they are selling something they want you to buy to treat it instead.

I can usually take benadryl for a few nights and mine will mostly dry up. If it gets worse, blistering in spots, and I want to stop it quick, I will just scratch it good and put on a 50/50 mix of clorox and water. That stings like heck but it will sure dry it up quick.

Think I will pass on trying the eat it thing for now.

Oh come on Tn! Mix you up a bowl full with some green onions and bacon grease and see if it works.

Although I am (pretty much) immune to Poison Ivy and Poison Oak, I would not tempt fate or Mother Nature by drinking such a concoction! Note: I used \"pretty much\" in brackets as I believe I am 100% immune to these as I have actually walked, crawled, rolled and even slept in these with no effect. However, I have never made it a point to rub their' leaves or vines all over my' skin either.

I've eaten grapes that were intertwined with poison oak before. It gave me a rash over my entire body. Getting that sort of rash everywhere is not fun. I'd recommend not eating any plant like that, even if you're \"immune\". I was too, but apparently only when applied topically.
