TOPIC: Deer browsing ( 5 prong top and others...)

Deer browsing ( 5 prong top and others...) 12 years 6 months ago #19008

Hey Guys..

I have harvested a few red berries now in my seed producing bed, and have been planting those here on my place.

I made a trip down to the waterfall where I planted that nice root that Billy sent me (the 5 prong top) to see if it had any red berries yet.

I could not even find it. It was gone. No sign of the top at all.

There is a decent 3 prong just around the hill from it and it was still there, but a tree top had fallen on it and sort of had it protected.

I went just around the hill to where 5-6 other plants were growing and at first saw no sign of them either, but when I got up close I could see the stems sticking up on some of them. They had obviously been browsed by deer.

That made me realize that is probably what happened to the 5 prong top too. It is so steep there where that 5 prong is planted, I had hoped that the deer would not bother it, but it sure looks like they got it anyway.

In that little area there are 6-7 ginseng plants that I have been watching for a few years now, and the 5 prong too. All but 1 have been eaten by deer.

Looks like we will have to wait for next spring to see that 5 prong top again. I bet it will be a bueaty next spring when it comes up. I will try to find a nice tree top to lay in there where it is planted this winter, so it will be protected from the deer next year.

TN,
Sure glad to hear you are getting some ripe berries off your seed beds.
I've picked about 300 so far and somewhere about 400 to go as they ripen.

Sorry to hear about the deer browsing your nice tops but hopefully some brush tops will protect them next year.

In an area that I planted 300 rootlets, the deer not only ate the tops, some of the roots were dug up by them.

Makes me hunt them all the more!
