Nice roots!

How old are those roots? Were they from soil that was tilled(cultivated) or are they Wild Simulated from untilled soil?

thanks Classicfur,
I am real happy with the results of these roots!
Seed was from Micheal Hunter of Glacial Ginseng, which I planted in the fall of 2006 ( 4 yrs old ) I did not do any tilling of the soil, only scatched the rocky shale soil, hand casted the seed, covered & mulched . I always have thought this soil would naturally, cause them to be narley roots.

I am thinking I have wild simulated roots !
still not sure why all the contention
for names if roots are marketed by appearance. Who really knows wher the roots come from ? The diggers will not tell or show anyone !

Thanks for posting more pics.

It's true that appearance has alot to do with what you get paid. But your going to have some roots that will look more like Wild than others. Some Will look wild and some will look like Carrots. But you will still sell them as a Lot, and as Wild Simulated.

The thing about names for roots is it gives a reference to how they were grown.

Cultivated means that man has manipulated them and helped them in many ways to grow large. Like tilling the soil and adding fertilizers to get a large root. Also spraying fungicides often and on many farms they spray every three weeks.

Then on the other end you have Wild simulated Ginseng. Planted in a Wild setting where wild ginseng is growing or could grow. Where very little is done at all to the soil and the roots from the time the seeds are planted until they are harvested. Which gives you a root that's the closest thing to a \"Wild Root\" without actually being a Wild Root. And should bring you a price second only to wild.

The only reason I was so interested in how you grew them is because I have Wild simulated Roots also. I have about 40,000 ranging from 1-4 years old in Maine. Also have about 5,000 growing in Wisconsin 5-6 year olds.

I have a friend in WI. that harvested some Wild Simulated at 8 yrs old and got a little less than the Wild price.

Thanks for sharing and Good Luck with your roots!

classicfur,
thanks again for your imput, I posted these in hopes of others opinions and advice.
I do understand the methods vs product
My experience of ginseng roots is limited to my research, and dabling in health foods for years. Ginseng has always been a favorite.I have never hunted ginseng roots. I have been told by locals that my hills were covered (and all picked) years before I built my home here. (14 yrs ago) That is why I planted 1/2 pd of seed in 2006 to see how they would grow. Last year my boy and I put in 17 pds of seed, this spring we had seedlings everywhere.
I am glad to have had your thoughts. Jimseng

Those look like some pretty decent roots to be only 4 years old. Im curious as to their average weight if you happenend to check. Im doing a planting in ground that sounds alot like yours as well.

classicfur,

You said you have about 40,000 plants ranging from 1-4 years. What percent of plants do you have after 4 years from planting?
