TOPIC: Microrhyzal communities and their relation to the Cosmos....

Microrhyzal communities and their relation to the Cosmos.... 11 years 11 months ago #21831

I was attempting to have a little humor to this important topic. We could get all serious about it... it's pretty important to our business. Many of us have a detailed understanding of this, and many of us are still learning about it. In another thread, there were many excellent posts dancing around this topic. I wanted to start this thread to see if we could put it all \"under one roof\" so to speak.

VaFiddler, Hillhopper, HUgh, and others I'm likely forgetting just now [it's early, and I'm not coffeed-up just yet] posted some very good references and thoughts in that other thread. Perhaps we could continue that discussion here? What do you guys think?

Are these fungal communities visable? I see many white thready \"things\" under the leaves I rake when planting. these appear to be fungal, and spread seemingly in all directions; however limited to their area of growth. These are actually at the level of the soil, not really in amongst the leaves. I'mm thinking that you guys have seen these as well.

Or all these microrhyzal communities not visable, and are only in there like the micronutrients... I mean, it's hard for me to lean down and pick up a chunk of just nitrogen out of my woods, and call it that... so are these fungi just at the tiny level and not visable?

Va Fiddler- I'm appreciating the references you left on that other thread. Going to have to read those soon.

Whitjr,
Talking about fungal diseases, After I treat my seed with bleach water and let them dry off I also dust my seed with actinovate right before planting. I put one teaspoon in a baggy that has one lb. of seed and shake well. I think TNhunter had the idea of using actinovate.
It is organic fungicide that eats harmful fungus. How well it works I don't know yet.
I have transplanted using this in a water solution and had excellent results with plants surviving.

When I was scraping the ground to plant my ginseng seeds a few weeks ago I found a ball of mycorrhizal fungus about the size of a baseball. It must of been an area of loose soil that the fungus grew into and filled, because it was about 50% dirt 50% fungus. The fungus is usually visible in the rooty layer near the surface. It generally looks like white tendrils going through the soil. Also it's visible, but some times hard to notice, if you pull a sapling out of the ground. It grows on the fine roots of the saplings and makes tiny gushy white ball like structures mixed in with the roots.

I have been seeing similar areas in my two patches. I'm actually glad to see these.

This sort of thing is what I was starting this thread about. Not treating seeds for fungals problems. I appreciate the knowledge-base here.

Latt- Thanks for getting the historical link posted here.

Whit,
I bought some of the same stuff Classicfur was using and recommended back then. The lady on the phone at the company was really nice to talk to. She had a wealth of knowledge about the product. I have only used it in some of my plantings and have yet to determine if there is a difference since I have not used it for very long. There is a water soluble powder that you mix a small amount of powder with water and it goes a long. There is a granulated product that you can broadcast. I bought the water soluble product and soaked my seeds with it. The water soluble product that you mix is also good for foliage application as well where the granulated is only good for broadcasting on the ground. Kelly send me a trial size bottle of the granulated for free. Both have merit thou.
Here is the link to the Plant Helper product.

I cut and pasted this below from Classicfur's post:

I purchased some of the TRICHODERMA ATROVIRIDE direct from the manufacturer and was able to talk to Kelly, one of the head people and she was alot of help with questions I had. And they will sell small quantities and a small amount will cover a large area.
Here is some of Ampac TRICHODERMA ATROVIRIDE pages:

I feel that the biggest advantage with the TRICHODERMA ATROVIRIDE is that it can get growing in the cold soil before the bad fungi has a chance to start growing in the spring.

I'm pretty excited to see the results of using this product.

If you click on the www.ampacbiotech.net/research/ging1.html and click on the next page it will show you Pictures and results of when this product is used on specifically on GINSENG. The second link below shows some impressive results of roots that have been treated with the product verses roots that have not. www.ampacbiotech.net/research/ginseng/ginsengslide.html

Makes me wonder why I do not use it on every seed I plant from here on out with results like these.
Thanks,
