Just a heads up, with all the draught this year, good seed will be hard to find. From what I've seen and heard the average size of seed will be smaller but the price will be more.

Guy I know you have been planting a long time. I have always wondered this. Does a larger seed produce a better root or plant? I know mathematically it would make sense to want smaller seeds if we are paying by the pound. Lets face it, a pound of large seed might contain 6,500 seeds where a pound of small seed could contain about 7,200 seeds. So smaller seeds = more plants I guess.
Always wondered about if seed size made for a better root thou.

Those are good Q's, Latt. another one is wether or not a small seed has any effect on the plant's ability to grow into usual mature size.

I'm hearing similar things Guy. I am anticipating a nearly triple price increase at the wholesale level.

Sounds right to me about high seed prices. I always have enough of my own seed to stratify and plant next fall, But this season I didnt get any, most plants didnt even get seeds on them and the ones that did dried up before they made.

Latt, if the average seed is say 1/4 inch then 1/8 inch is what I'm talking about as small. What I see is maybe around 20% are half size and 5% are tiny but are fully formed. Funny looking really. This is with the field grown mega farms.

I'll always take the larger seed, they produce a larger plant in the first year and better germination and survival rate. Don't think it makes a difference down the road except that you'll have a root to look at.
Our plants produced about 30% less but had know size issue and are healthy looking. We try to plant close to seeps for the obvious water advantage but also for the cooler soils and more consistant growing condition.
