We own a farm and we carry insurance on most everything on the farm including crop insurance. Has anyone every looked into having an insurance policy on their ginseng? I'm not sure if it's even possible or if anyone would cover it. We have purchased a 15 acre track of land that adjoins our farm and around 5 acres is perfect ginseng habitat. I would like to make this my \"retirement\" patch because I know that there will come a day when I can't pound the miles on myself like I do now searching for sang. My first plan of attack to keep poachers at bay will be a woven wire fence with electric on top just like what's around the rest of our farm so nothing will look out of place. Then I will fence off the patch with the same wire to keep the livestock out and our great pyrennese will be roaming the outside with our dairy goats and cattle. Inside the \"patch encloser\" I will place a IR (no flash) game camera or two (once the sang is at a harvestable point) in the trees inside metal locked boxes to have records and hopefully pictures of the face of any poachers. However, poachers are persistant cusses and will find a way in if they are determined so I would like to take out some insurance for the \"just in case\".
My insurance man is looking into it, as I have a \"cadillac\" policy. Would maybe work as ginseng is considered personal property in Wi. but I have no hope. As far as insurance, I think if you have theft you better have apprehended a violator, as how do they know you didn't dig it yourself?
FYI, since you mentioned crop insurance, ginseng is considered a specialty crop, but it would have to the farmed ginseng, not wild, from what I understand.
I know the ginseng policies are extremely rare, if they exist at all. Again, if looking at federal crop insurance programs, look at the specialty crops.
