TOPIC: Growing ginseng above 4000ft. altitude

Re:Growing ginseng above 4000ft. altitude 12 years 2 months ago #19473

Sidehiller,
That's Max Patch, just across the state line in N.C. The Tennessee border runs real close here and in some places it's just a few hundred yards hundreds yards between the two
state lines. It's beautiful country.

Are you allowed to dig near max patch? I didn't think you could. I dug some BEAUTIFUL stuff at about 4,500 last week. Yellow and standing strong. I've been trying to get it to grow at my dad's place which is about 4,200 but to no avail

Dumpy,
I don't know if Max Patch is a part of the Harmon Den Wildlife Mngt. Area or not. If it is, I don't think you would be able to dig. If it is just a part of the Pisgah National Forest, you probably could. The state line is real close there and that is part of the Cherokee National Forest. That is where I had just come through from and then passed into N.C. I hope this helps.
I was scouting some territory this morning at the 3000 ft. level and I found a couple of 3 Prongs. They were still green and had red berries on them.

That's what I was thinking. Don't think it's allowed there. 3000 feet is great. I dug most of mine this year between 3000-5000 feet. Everything around here is yellow more or less, but dug some around 22-2300 feet last week that was green and strong as can be, and BIG stuff. Wanna go back in a week or so if I canB)
