TOPIC: First Planting of 2012

First Planting of 2012 12 years 4 months ago #18204

Well fellows,
I just planted my first seed for this season. I knew they weren't far away from starting to ripen and this morning I looked over some of my 4 prongs and there were ripe and partially ripe seeds hanging all over them. This blazing hot weather (96%) every day has really hastened the season along. When I took a pod in my hand they just started falling off. I had not prepared to start stratifying them so I just planted them in the ground where I had a bare spot. Get ready Tennessee growers. It will be upon you in a few days.

Wow, that's not good news at all. I guess it is time to pre=order some seed for this year before the price spikes in august, I have a feeling that seed production this year will be low due to the weather, and if this hot dry weather continues i anticipate seeing ginseng sell at a higher price this fall. its all supply and demand. most of the ginseng in tennessee will probably pack it in by the end of july. better get my metal markers in the ground so i can go out in october and dig some herb when it hits 700-800 per lb.

K_duce - You may be right. It has been very dry for the past month in my part of Ohio. If we don't get some substantial rain in the next couple of weeks I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of plants abort berry production and fall pretty early, but probably not too much until the middle of august around here...and if that happens in wide spread areas, then yes prices will climb.
