TOPIC: Random pics from 2 days ago

Re:Random pics from 2 days ago 12 years 10 months ago #17298

TN - Thanks

That sure was a good dinner the other night. If you were nearby I'd have been glad to share. My wife is not a big fan of fish or mushrooms, so there's usually more than enough for more than just me.

I also have a big 2+ ounce Kentucky mountain root planted.(Mine had a 4-prong top last year) As of thursday night there still was no sign of it yet. I'm not too concerned as a lot of the ginseng around here still hasn't popped up. I'd guess that only about half of it is showing up right now. After about 2 more weeks most all of them should be up for the year.

Good luck. That sure looks like a nice location.

Tn and 5 I think that your root`s will be ok and even if they do not come up this season they still may come up next season, alot of the transplants do come up ok the next season so long as the bud is still ok when replanted, and you know how carefull i am,,,,however I am doing some exsperimenting of my own that has required for me to do some transplanting the past few seasons,,and have saw that even when i transplant localy from one holler to another a few miles away that the top does not always come up the first season after transplanting and it is usaly the larger plants that do not come up untill the 2nd season after i remove them.It has averaged to be 50/50 or maybe a little bettter that the biggger transplants come up without skipping a year.,,whyll the smaller transplants of 5 to 10 years age seem to be 80 or 90 percent coming up the next season,,,this to is something i have noted...I think that the shock of removing and transplanting the larger roots is more stressfull to them than the smaller roots simply because they are well established, but they will come up after they rest if not this season then another,,so far I have not lost one large transplanted root,,,but i have had 2 that actualy missed two seasons coming up and i thought they where done, then to my pleasent suprise they are up this season I dont truly know if im 100 0/0 right but this is my exsperience
once we transplant with exstream care,, a large root,it might lay dorment for 1 even 2 seasons but it will come back up,,,,so far i am 100 0/0 since these two came up this season....and the smaller ones will mostly come up,i mean small 4`s and decent 3`s not babys....

G/L guys I hope that your two beautiful tops come up if not this season then next,

Billy.

Billy,

I bet you are right about that. If it don't come up this spring, bet it will next.

In my seed producing bed I planted 44 roots, and 42 of them came up the first year (last spring)- that was outstanding.

I checked it yesterday evening and at this point 40 of them are up this year, but some of those have just come up the past couple of days.

The leaves have not even un-rolled yet.

So I still have hope to see that 5 prong top this year. I will check on it agian in another week or two.

5Prong - I am not so lucky with my wife and fish - she likes em as good as I do - so I always have to share with her :-)

My seed producing plants came up good. 115 out of 125. but there is still time.
Now on the other hand my stratified seed hasn't come up good at all. Got my fingers crossed.

Rootman - Are your seed producing plants in a raised bed? I've got a small woodland hillside dedicated to seed producing plants. They are just scattered here and there up and down the hillside. I did not get an exact count, but transplanted over 100 mature (3 and 4 prongs of different ages) roots to this area last fall. There was some mature plants along with younger ones already there. I'm looking foreward to seeing this area soon. I was out yesterday checking on my plantings of stratified seed. A lot of what I planted last fall was kinda just here and there, hit and miss type of planting. I did plant a few small plots so that I could gauge how well they germinated this spring. From what I saw yesterday I'd say that I'm getting above 80% germination. This is a guestimate as I did not keep track of actual number of seeds that got planted in each plot. I'm keeping that guess on the low side. The actual % may be well into the 90's. Most of what I planted last fall was in a modified Hankins method, similar to how I've always planted ripe berries. I'd used the rake and scatter method the previous fall and it was a disaster, but I think the seed had a good deal to do with that.

Good luck with all of your plantings.

Hey 5,
Yes the plants are in 10 rows like sweet potato ridges with drainage ditches and pipes around the perimeter. The 10 x 20 plot is surrounded by and across the top with rabbit wire.
I have half natural shade and some artificial shade and can add more as the sun gets higher.

thanks, rootman

got one more to show. There are 3 plants in this hard to see pic. 2 2-prongs that are intertwined and a 3-prong plant that has just pushed through the ground and is still bent over just to the left of the 2prongs
