Those are some really nice looking and old Ginseng roots! Not to criticize your digging but I can see that a lot of the root fibers and even some root extensions are broken off. Don't be afraid to dig a wide hole around the plants to insure that you get the root intact and undamaged as it will fetch much more money if not damaged. If you upset some small roots, just lay them aside and replant them before moving on to other plants. I always carry some extra water just for such cases!

Also, the Ginseng plants that goes or has gone dormant on your friend's land due to the logging by the previous owner, will probably send tops back up in 5 to 10 years if the undergrowth and canopy is heavy enough to give them shade. If the logged portion of the property was not seeded (tree-wise), you all could help the process quicker by seeding the logged area with good, fast growing hardwoods!

I am more than glad to help a fellow digger! I recently purchased 3 Ginseng digging hoes at a local Flea Market. They are perfect for digging seng and I could let one go for what I paid ($15) and the shipping costs if you are interested. These are made by a gentleman in Southeast Kentucky and he uses truck springs to make the head which is a basically a double bladed mattock. He uses whatever pipe that he can find to make the piece that holds the handle and some are large but some are real small. This one is so small that he used a pool cue as the handle. However, the pool cue as a handle is suprisingly strong and durable! I will try to get a pic of it later today and post it.
