TOPIC: Oldest root yet!

Re:Oldest root yet! 13 years 5 months ago #12125

Maya,
Nice roots. You must have some really rich and loose loamy soil too. Those roots look like they were heading for China. Deep very deep with long root hairs.

This was the best spot I've found yet Latt. 2 miles off the nearest road and in a deep, deep ravine. This was from one drainage going into the ravine. Yes, most all was deep, rich, loamy soil right along the drainage.Easy digging! What was interesting though is the old root was near the bottom! I do have several more roots I dug in the 20- 35 year range.

The ravine is over a half mile long and the east face is alomost a straight drop off. I haven't even explored 1% of it. Should be great. I hope Irene doesn't down a bunch of trees on my path into it, takes long enough as it is to get there!

Has anyone sold an old root like this, and what did you get for it?

I have one at 50 years plus but have not tried to sell it yet. I always hear about getting a premium price for old roots but have never seen anyone other than ebay get a better price, Plus selling on ebay can be trouble of not done correctly.

How bout selling as a private sale Latt? Say someone saw this thread and offered me a price for that root, any problems selling it and shipping it via mail?

Maya,

You might check your States ginseng laws and see about whether you can ship out of state and if so what is required to do so.

In TN only a registered dealer can ship ginseng or take it out of State and it cost 250.00 to become a registered dealer - and before it can leave the State it has to be certified (a park ranger can do that - and that does not cost anything but your time and efforts to get that done).

Good Luck !

Not sure if I'll be able to get out digging for a while, many of our roads are completely washed out from Irene!!! This is a small brook near my house.

Maya, wow! I was going to ask how you were doing. I know the weather channel was saying how hard hit you all were by the heavy rain and flooding. Hope things get back to normal quickly.
